It is time to “Eat the Rich”

Over 200 years ago, on another continent, the people of France rose against inequality, landlessness, and abject poverty. They could no longer tolerate the excessive wealth and corruption of the elite at the expense of their dignity. It was a watershed event that catalysed a complete change in the systems of government.

The world over, the poor and the working class are again standing up for the rights of citizens. While a small elite lives a life of luxury and splash their cars and food and homes and holidays all over social media, the majority starve. While politicians slip their diamonds under their red collars or look all cozy and warm in their custom leather jackets or embroidered blazers, ordinary citizens are suffering. They are either being taxed to the hilt or dying of starvation.

People are reaching the same levels of desperation and resentment as the poor and working-class of France did when Rousseau said, “When the poor have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich!”.

Just like France centuries ago, we have various groups agreeing that there should be reform and equality, and all claiming to know how best to do it but many, particularly the wealthy, are loathe to change because it will mean giving up their privileges and curtailing their riches. It will mean listening to the people. It will mean allowing the people to send ordinary citizens, that they choose, to represent them in government instead of politicians selected by their tender-in-waiting party members.

The 2021 election is a watershed election for South Africa. It is the opportunity for the people to stand up against the politicians and their white monopoly capitalist cronies. It is time to rid South Africa of all trace of imperialist, colonial, and apartheid rule and the inequality, greed, and corruption that comes with it.

The only way to do this is at the voting station on 27th October 2021. This election is even more important than the first democratic elections in 1994 because it is the opportunity to create a completely new people-centric system. A system that is driven by active citizens which will uproot the one we inherited from our oppressors that our so-called leaders disguised as freedom.

Register to vote. Stand up for your community. Nominate a community leader you respect to stand for office. Stand for office yourself. And then, make sure you vote.

Now is the time to vote against the powerlessness and privation South Africans have been subject to for generations, once and for all. It is time to restore our dignity.

It is time to “eat the rich”.
